Music: A Country Boy Can Survive

Hank Williams Jr. – A Country Boy Can Survive

The Interest is up and the stock market’s down – and you’ll only get mugged if you go downtown.

I’ve got a shotgun, rifle, and a four wheel drive – and a country boy can survive.

I can plough a field all day long, I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn.

Make our own whisky and our own smoke too – ain’t too many things these old boys can’t do.

Grow good ol tomatoes and homemade wine – and a country boy can survive.

We can skin a buck, we can run a trout line – and a country boy can survive.

What a great song.  Pretty much sums up a lot of the topics that interest us striving for self sufficiency and personal sovereignty.  Hank Williams Jr. is a great music artist and has some great songs.  Watch the video here then head off to YouTube to find some related ones.

Do you have a favourite song that helps spread the message of liberty and freedom?

GMO Food Labelling

GMO Food Labelling does not Mean Halting Research

Of more importance than the post on consumer nutrition responsibility, today I want to cover GMO food labelling.

GMOs are a hot topic for debate these days.  On one hand they allow farmers to grow more food, with less effort, and generally with the use of herbicide sprays that would kill the non-GMO versions of the plants.  Other GMOs have nutrients added in to the food to help prevent some malnutrition in children in poorer countries.  Golden Rice is the best example of that.

But that is exactly the issue, do we want to eat this food that has been heavily sprayed with roundup?  Do we want to eat food that has been modified at the genetic level with fish genes and a virus?

I won’t go into my beliefs on whether GMO foods are good or bad.  In short I think the research is good but I don’t want to consume them.  But there’s the problem, how do I know what foods have GMO ingredients in them and what foods do not?

In the News: US Government Shutdown

Today we are all reading about the US government shutdown.

Should we in Canada care?  Does it affect us?

Well yes and no.  It doesn’t really affect you (unless you’re travelling to a national park) – but it is good to pay a bit of attention to it.

But in reality it is interesting to see how this is playing out, the causes, and the effects.  It is really coming off as a bit of a child’s game.

In The News: RCMP Gun Seizure in High RIver

The flood may be old news, but the RCMP gun seizure in high river is still an ongoing concern.

Essentially, the story is that police were going door-to-door during the High River, Alberta floods in June of 2013.  They say it was to search for possible victims, injured people, elderly, and other people requiring help.  However, when they were in the houses, any firearms they saw improperly stored (their interpretation) they seized for “safe keeping”.

Ron Paul on Jay Leno

This website is focused on Canada and how Canadians and our friends can increase their personal liberty.  In Canada, we have a lot of media influence coming up from the USA.  It is so bad, in fact, that many Canadians follow the US presidential election more closely that any Canadian Federal Election – and I think that’s a bad thing.

However, there is a lot you can learn from our friends to the south and I recommend you be on the lookout for these things.  Listening to Dr.Ron Paul speak is exactly one of these things.  He has the most level headed approach & ideas of any mainstream politician.

Here I would like to share the video of him of his appearance on Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show this past Friday 26/Sept/2013

Weekend Podcast Episodes

Podcast episodes that I recommend while you’re working or working out this weekend.

Some are new, some are from the archive – but all caught my eye for the weekend.  Get in all four, but aim for the six.

  • Chef Keith’s Harvest Eating Episode 176 – Charred Tomato Chipotle Salsa (Keith is behind on his show notes so you will just have to listen to it in iTunes).  If you are in iTunes and have time, check out episode 174 – Ideas for cooking with local fall Apples.  I loved the idea of charring your veggies for your salsa.  Warning these podcasts always make you hungry.  I have previously recommended that you subscribe to this podcast for all episodes.  But these two are important and timely enough for fall food preparation, that I want to specifically mention them here.

Weekend Formula

Ideas for the weekend

For many of us, the weekend is our time of freedom.  Sure we have small amounts of time during the week to cook, exercise, spend time with loved ones, and relax.  But Friday night through Sunday night is our time to really get things done.

Use the weekend wisely and you will be well on your way to personal sovereignty.  Use it poorly and you are at least one more week behind your goals.

Debt is Financial Cancer

Financial sovereignty is attained by understanding that debt is financial cancer, eating away at your future

There are only four situations that I can condone the use of debt:

1) Purchase of a home

It is very difficult to just show up and pay cash for a home, especially as a first-time buyer.  However, you do not want to be over leveraged and end up underwater with the loan if housing prices ever take a dive.  I recommend the 20% downpayment, or at least enough to be sure that you do not have to buy mortgage insurance.  Also, be sure that you could handle a raise in interest rates if you intend to take a variable rate mortgage.
